Chatterjee Tara is a divorcee from her very wealthy and enterprising husband. They are living in the suburb of San Francisco with a devoted carpenter. She is the youngest daughter of a wealthy family of Brahmin from East Bengal in The United States of America. This story swings from both front and back atmosphere within the small ancestral village in Bengal and in San Francisco. Tara contrast her other two sisters who have decided to cling to the traditions and cultures of her Indian origin. She tries to attain this by engaging in the quest for the commonality with the American culture and beliefs. As the saying goes, a simple change is like a rest, Tara believes that by advancing towards the New American culture will bring peace to her very conservative culture forced upon her by her immediate family in the Indian culture. This has really affected her entire life right from birth to marriage and the only hope remaining for Tara is to try and diverge from the humiliating culture of the Indians and get a new lease of life in the American culture.
It is however very ironical because it is the same Tara who goes on an expedition to find out much about the ancestral history of her Indian culture. On this very expedition, she finds out that her great- great aunt had been married to a specific sacred tree that gave birth to the major struggle of the Indian independence. This is closely linked to the Indian heroes and heroines who greatly participated in the struggle for Indian independence from the British. It is very vivid that Tara decided to pick the American culture as opposed to the British culture since the Britons colonized their mother land and this implies that they left most of the cultural beliefs for adoption by the natives of the Indian land. The Indian culture is a mixture of the two cultures currently because of the colonization process.
As a matter of fact, Tara decides to have some rest by engaging the American culture which she tries to attain or adopt amid a lot of hardships from the surrounding environment including her immediate family members and the wider community like the Americans themselves. The Americans are not ready to reveal much of their cultural practices to Tara in the ultimate end. The story takes a funny twist whereby some style of uncertainty comes out to the scene in order for Tara to clear the air as to whether the stranger she meets in San Francisco is genuine or not. She meets a young man who claims to be her late sister’s son and claims to be living in New Jersey in America. Tara is confused as to whether the young man would help her in learning the cultures of the American people (Bharati 1967, pg 56).
Her sister used to be very traditional and very Indian in her undertakings. She wears the Indian saris and eats only the Indian foods, follows the Indian etiquette. All these are very disorientating to Tara as she tries to link this to the sister’s relenting habit of having an illegitimate son with an American yet she claims to be against the whole idea of welcoming the American culture into her very traditional style of the Indian origin. There is a lot of suspense built in this area in the lifestyle of Tara and the entire plot of the story. The mystery in this case is very secondary and not viable at all. There is a pull between the two cultures in this issue. Tara together with her teenage son tries to mould and bring in the American culture into the Indian culture in order to amalgamate the two cultures with an exemplary fission of the Indian culture. Additionally, her sisters in Bombay and New Jersey still hold onto the Indian culture although they are distant apart from each other.
